My background as an actor has taught me how to engage and “perform” for my students, presenting information in a way that is fun and exciting. In learning to act, I was really learning how to use my full body and voice to communicate, something that will prove useful in teaching a new language. As a drama teacher, I put those skills to use in engaging my students, and teaching them a wide variety of material.
As an instructional assistant in a public school, I put those skills to use in 1:1 and small group settings. Working with a child who had learning disabilities taught me to be creative in my teaching, and find a way to explain a concept that makes sense to the student. Especially when it is difficult for the student to understand the language, one must be able to simplify and break down ideas in a variety of ways.
I have always loved teaching. In school, I was apt to help my fellow students complete their homework at the expense of my own. That passion has grown and evolved into my adult life, and I am excited to turn that passion towards teaching English. Learning German myself, I can empathize with the challenges and frustrations, but also the joys students face in learning a new language.
